Modern Technologies and Development

Modern Technologies and Development

Islam embraces science and technology and is at the forefront of developing new technologies for the betterment of humanity. Humanity can use technology to harm and to heal, to bring low and to improve lives. Its dual nature is one of the many reasons it cannot be taught or understood in a vacuum.

We must always teach technology within a moral and ethical context. The potential consequences of any technological development should always be considered. We must always question why. Not only should we ask if something can be achieved, but should it be achieved?

Technology can improve lives by increasing farming yields without damaging the environment. It can help us better understand changing weather patterns and prepare us for severe weather. Technology can help improve outcomes for the sick and injured. New surgical techniques, new medicines, and new devices to assist with recovery all improve lives.

Embracing change does not mean moving forward without thinking about the consequences. We should assess all modern technologies and developments within the context of our faith. We need to separate those that bring benefits and glory to Allah from those that don’t. We must focus our time and attention on the former while clarifying why the latter is inappropriate.

By ensuring we explore the moral and ethical sides of technology, we can better prepare our young people for the world in which they live and grow. We cannot simply ignore technology and new developments. Doing so limits knowledge and understanding. An open debate with those developing the technologies and our scholars is the only way forward.

At ILM Academy, we embrace modern technologies that help our students learn and understand the world in which we live. We develop their moral and ethical understanding of such technologies so that they can make informed choices at every stage of their learning and development.
